When I was about 20 I bought myself

an HMS 18. It's the slightly larger West White Potter which was 14 feet long and more famous. It had an RDF, a depth sounder and CB radio and I installed a QME self steering vane. The vane didn't work for S#$T but that didn't keep my from sailing that thing from Dana Point to Catalina Island, to Santa Barbara Island, to Santa Cruise Island, to Santa Barbara City and back to Dana Point. I sold it after several years and many miles later but the thing I remember most is that it was a lot of work to set up and launch. No wonder the old guy had a heart attack the first time out. Once I got the hang of it the effort needed was reduced drastically but the first couple of times out of the bag, it worked me dearly.
