Speaking of which....

A Kiwi friend recalled a school he attended that was built in the English tradition, with an enclosed courtyard facing south. In England, that worked famously to capture low angle sun's rays. Uh, not so good when oriented south in New Zealand. We loved it and it was British planning at its best! Good thing the Brits have done plenty of things well to compensate!
