I was sailing in a 50 mile race but we didn't break anything on the boat. The wind ranged from 4 to about 20 knots and we averaged 5.5 knots of boat speed with a peak of 9.9 knots according to my track. I did manage to do some damage to myself although that didn't have anything to do with the temperature. I am sure the change in air density relating to temperature has an impact on the loads on the sails for a given wind speed. Around here the winds tend to pick up in the fall and higher wind speeds contribute to damage potential at least as much as the temperature. The other thing to consider is that materials behave differently at different temperatures. Many materials become more brittle at lower temperatures making them more susceptible to failure under shock loading.
