bought in 2004. Scanner is Koden. The Koden MDS 2 control box puts our an RS422 signal to the PC which will not work with TimeZero software
Nobeltec tell me that if I replace the control box with an Koden MDS 5R control box ($2000 from Nobeltec, $1350 from J&S Marine in Tacoma, Koden agents) with an Ethernet output, I can run either VNS or Trident with the Radar.
The TimeZero charts for Trident are much cheaper than the MaxPro for VNS. In any event Nobeltec will stop selling charts for VNS in 2 months. Being abandoned like that does not make me keen to continue to do business with Nobeltec, although the above solution is a fairly attractive option.
One alternate choice would be buying a new charting system, using the old PC monitor for radar only.
Another choice is to buy all the VNS charts we expect to need in the next few years (about $1500) before Nobeltec cuts them off.
What we really want is a true broadband radar that will work with our charts on the PC. I have not found one, but assume one will emerge as the radar guys realize that selling their overpriced low resolution screens is not appealing to people like me.
All advice and ideas welcome
