Sailing in August on the North Coast

light air is a given for the dog days here....well, except this year when it was blowing stink from the East almost all summer.

Back when we had our Catalina 25 we were out on the bay in August with hardly a breeze. The 165 was rolled out but we were barely moving. It was a long and sweaty bob on the bay that my crew did not appreciate. I began researching and bought a "drifter" sail from Minnie's out in California. It was basically a genoa made of spinnaker cloth......I would say maybe the forerunner of the cruising chute or AS? I attached it to a pendant on the stem fitting, an extra jib halyard and had a set of light weight sheets. I don't think the whole rig weighed 15 lbs. THAT was a perfect light air sail that also looked cool when it was filled. It was a bright blue and was just the ticket to get that little boat moving when the wind was in that 0-5knt range. I was looking at one for the IP over the summer, but the dog days never came this year. A storm jib and new foul weather gear would have been a better choice.......I did get that foul weather gear.

FYI, lake effect snow warning in place here today...........sigh..........snowing like a SOB right now.
