It's easy to get lost so if you don't have a smart phone, look for paper...
As a traveler in Rome, I get lost in the history- the buildings, the ruins. History goes back, obviously, forever in Rome. Everywhere you look, it's there. You trample history walking in Rome, my mind can't take it all in.
What I don't get, are the people. There's a barrier between me and the people that is mostly language. That came clear as a bell to me as I heard my sons name called out on the street, even from windows above the crowd. Not a celebrity(he does have a Roman girlfriend though,...), he just speaks the language(and I think he is very likeable). Young Tom has the people of Rome, he's a 'local', lucky cuss.
I advise you take someone that speaks Italian to Rome, only order the local wine, and take a good experienced crew.
I take pictures. You can hardly sit down in Rome without something like the Parthenon in the background, messing up your photos.
