2 was directly from a book called "Blue Highways" I just started reading. I should have added the reference.

1 was my own extrapolation of thought stemming from another portion of reading. The first few words are a partial quote, the remaining portion is generalization or extension of thought stemming from something else more specific.

Not sure if I'll finish the book, I'm just getting started. It hasn't really pulled me in yet. I'm going to give it more time because Jan Irons raved about it in her Commuter Cruiser newsletter, and I've been following that blog from time to time. I like their style.
