NYS exemts sales tax on boats over 230K

I guess they think NYS residents are illiterate and dumb as those elsewhere. The rationale given by the Senate majority leader and the Governor is that NYS residents may go out of State to make their big yacht purchase and this will allow NYS boat builders and dealers to compete. While there may be good reason to avoid sales tax on a specific item this is not one of them and I can't think of a very good one, anyway. Why? If a NYS resident buys a yacht in Rhode Island, for instance, and registers it in Rhode Island there is no sales tax. If he takes the boat to NY for less than 60 days there is no sales tax. If an out of NYS resident buys a boat in NY there is no sales tax on that purchase. So, this exemption allows wealthy New Yorkers not to pay sales tax on a luxury item, keep it past 60 days in NY, with absolutely no benefit to job creation or any other purpose in NYS. Take a drive from any one of our Airports to see the absolutely third word state of affairs are roads are in. Our infrastructure s crumbing and this give away stinks.
