A 120th Anniversary toast to honor the memory of Joshua Slocum the first sailor to sail around the world on his little boat SPRAY may be on order. Captain Slocum left Boston harbor alone on April 24th,1895 just a few weeks from now.
Just recently the NYT had a "human interest" story about the Explorers Society. In the last century the like of Roosevelt, Vanderbilt, Erickson and others would come to lecture rapt listeners on their discoveries. Rightly so and how exciting. Some today come to talk about cave diving and private space trips.
Among the first of equals was Joshua Slocum.
I've asked my YC to have a celebratory toast but few seem interested.
You can find me at Gallagher's Pub, Sea Cliff NY at 6:30 on April 24th where I shall raise a glass to Captain Slocum.
