I told her "dozens of repairs/fixes, just one small failure..."
The refrigerator worked just one time since I got the boat... and never again... I started in to fix it, and realized it was better off replaced with newer technology/refrigerant. I recently just did a quick job of massively improving the insulation by using foam panels and fitting them in the existing box... yes, it did reduce the size of the box, but I didn't really need the 6 cu.ft. I had in there before. I am now running some ice melt experiments to see how well the current arrangement works. My first experiment was just two gallons of ice frozen in blocks... lasted about 3 1/2 days and cooled a couple 6 packs of beer. Now I am using a big freezer bag, inside the ice box... the bag makes things easier to clean, and easier to concentrate the cold space. Thus far... 1 gallon of ice has lasted 2 days... and yes, the beer is cold.
This will get me away from the sliding ice chest on the cabin floor routine. At least until I get to this particular task. Eventually, I'll probably put in something like an Engel system. In the mean time, I can keep food and beer cool and not have to dance over a portable ice chest.
