One minute to start. Winnie of Bourne on a fast starboard reach, was closing the line. Suddenly, a jib sliced into view.

Both boats reaching on opposite tacks. The Swan 48, on port tack -- panicked(my guess). The Swan crews knee jerk reaction:"FALL OFF!!!" But Winnie of Bourne, also fell off. The Swans bow instantly pierced through Winnie's planking, just forward of the chain plates.

A rapidly sinking boat is utter chaos! Yet the captain kept the Concordia yawl on starboard to keep the hole high as he headed back toward Nantucket Harbor. But, with a hole like this, they go down so fast! Suddenly evident they wouldn't make it, he was able to sail off the inlet into shallower water. The crew of four took to the water, as Winnie settled on the bottom.

That was August, the beginning of the 2014 Nantucket Race week.

Here is Winnie of Bourne launched yesterday, in Rockport Harbor.
