Search Amazon or eBay for winch remotes - you will find them less than $20. Ours are more refined, in that the receiver/control board is in a case with leads coming out of it. They are also "waterproof" insomuch as the remotes have a rubber membrane underneath the buttons and o-ring seal between the two halves. But I wouldn't count on them working after being underwater for any length of time.
We have two because they were sold as a two-pack for $14.99. Both came with two remotes each. These are so inexpensive that even if I have to replace them every year, it will take 40 years until I spend more than I would have for a marine remote.
I took a flyer on them with little hope that they would actually work. I was surprised. Ours also has that 1/2 second delay, but so does our friend's $300 Lewmar remote, as well as our other friend's $300 Maxwell remote. In other words, it is the nature of these to do that regardless of price. Our new Maxwell windlass even has that delay using the wired foot controls, so it is the nature of some windlasses regardless. Our old Simpson Lawrence did not have this delay.
Heck, I bet if one opened those expensive marine remotes, they would find yours insideā¦
