I sail on a boat that has its only radar display on the pedestal. I can't overstate how frustrating, if not dangerous, it is..to be driving a boat at speed, in limited visibility, trying to maximize speed and stay under a spinnaker, and be expected to look out for other boats and obstacles on the only radar display. I am a firm believer in having radar in the cockpit, but it must be positioned so that people besides the helmsman can see it.
This is not limited to racing situations. If you have been caught out short-handed in a blow or a squall, you don't need to be the only person with an eye on the electronics.
On my boat, the chart plotter/radar display swings out into the companionway for everyone to see. I wouldn't have it any other way.
