My wife and I are taking a short cruise up the Hudson River, from Haverstraw to Kingston NY. We originally planed to leave on Monday, but they were predicting thunderstorms, so we left on Tuesday. In hindsight we should have left on Monday, because we woke up to a light Fog, but we left anyway, as we have GPS and I know the River. Perhaps it was a mistake as the Fog just got heavier with zero visibility at times, but I knew to stay closer to the shore and out of the channel and away from the barges.
Good thing for the Autopilot and the GPS, as it is impossible to steer a straight line when you cannot see 50 feet. We only encountered one Tug pushing 3 or 4 barges, up by West Point, just before the 'S' turn a Worlds End. When I pointed the Barges out to my wife she said, 'Look at the island'. We were off to the side and in no danger of getting crushed.
Just past Worlds End the fog lifted in about 10 minutes and we had a beautiful cruise the rest of the day. I must say that I was very tense motoring in Fog and but at lease we have no Lobster Pots to dodge. After the fog was gone we discussed getting AIS, which for me would also mean getting a new Multi-function display / GPS and when I mentioned 2K plus she didn't freak out so that may be my Christmas gift to myself this year.
