They've always been expensive -- not just costly, but high quality. Their problem is that the volume isn't there to support the business. That business has transitioned for the luxury, to super luxury. They've always been something like a better designed "Berger" quality (motor vessels).
In my opinion, if there was more market, they could get their market share.
It's a tough business with boats that are vastly outlasting the pace of market growth.
If you need a $1.5 Million daysailer or a $10 Million "modest" motor yacht, then....
The new powerboat market - Sea Ray, Viking, Ocean, etc. are relatively busy -- but the cost of the boats is way higher. (The average boat is probably more like 50' than 35' these days. And the price per pound is much higher as is the pounds.)
Getting into boating is mostly about buying a used boat. If I were starting out today, I couldn't even consider a new boat. We finally paid-off our 17 year old J/Boat last week. The cost of an equivalent new boat has more than 4x to 5x in that time since we bought her.
