Splicing wires...

Anytime you are splicing signal type wires you must be careful. A little extra resistance will throw the measurement off. Moisture in the splice and you will have headaches in the future. If you have to splice a signal cable solder each wire and cover the connection with heat shrink tubing with sealant inside it.

For peace of mind I would just pull the new cable through to the junction box.
