have used one on my storm jib/stay sail sheets for over 30 years. That way I could use my same sheets when I deployed the storm jib and make the swap quickly. It's only now that the new synthetic line material has allowed them to be made small enough that the application has opened up so much. Another use for "soft shackles" is for cockpit line storage. I've had 5 "elongated soft shackles" hanging from my twin back stay turn buckles which are close to my cockpit for years as well. I use them to secure the jib sheets, the main sheet and the stay sail sheets so they just hang ready to deploy. The eye portion is quite large for quick release from the button but never the less, it's basically a soft shackle. I use 1/4 inch three strand nylon which makes them large enough for quick work in bad or rainy weather and the lines just hang out of the way always ready. Their, maybe, 18 inches long and I loop them through the turn buckle with a half hitch so the loop part hang a bit lower then the button and can be brought up under the line. That way the button hangs on the outside of the coil. I find it a great way to keep my rather small cockpit neat and tidy. I'm going down to the boat today and I'll try to post a photo from my phone.
