The guy furling the jib only had one wrap around the wincht, then up to the "stripper"

() on the self-tailing winch. Either he was "distracted" or he doesn't know how to use the winch.
The guy on the helm could have feathered UP and taken a bunch of stress of the jib. Maybe they were "punch drunk" ;^)))). I've been there in the decades I've been sailing.
Reminds of some the things "I've learned from [bad] experience." :^))

- Yes, too much sail is my nightmare. I have to find reasons not to reef when I sail the boat.

- I think I would have my weather boards fitted in those conditions.
- Looked like they already had 2 reefs in, but they could have dropped the traveler.
