It's worse. No, seriously -- the East River gets a strong flushing out twice daily with the tides. The west end of LIS empties and fills through it. (Not that the west of LIS is clean).

If you want an example of the worst -- look up the history of the Gowanis Canal (which is off the East River). Now THAT's bad. That's where pickled herring comes from
