Problem installing off-engine oil filter

I just installed an off-engine oil filter on our Beta 60 (a marinised Kubota)
Engine has been unused all winter, so when first starting I am spinning it with the stop lever held down, to get coolng water through and oil through the engine
The oil pressure will not come up.
Some delay in building oil pressure is to be expected, since the new filter and about 4 feet of hose have to be filled.

The connection that bolts on to the engine block was not labelled for IN and OUT. The guy who sold me the filter (who is not available at the moment) told me which way to connect it
He may be wrong. I may have screwed up

Question is. What are the consequences of pushing oil through the flter element in the wrong direction?
