This was a number of years ago before the state standardized excise tax collection. I bought the boat in Massachusetts and trucked it to Maine not paying sales tax in either state. I suspect the state routinely checks CG documentation records and town excise tax information. Long story short, I paid the sales tax owed to the state of Maine. Unless you have a record of paying elsewhere you're stuck.
