I think maybe the only issue with rope is that the lashings are not possible to tie with the very thick ropes they would need to use. But if you look at http://www.colligomarine.com they have come up with some very creative ways to terminate and lash Dyneema, using many strands of smaller line.

Lashings have been around for centuries and are proven.
