An older photo that describes sailing, to my eye. Not much wind, there's no raucous flying spray which is a good way for a photo to tell the viewer, a boat is under sail.
It's the disappearing serpentine wake in this image - stretching aft, that says 'sail' to my eye. I remember that subtle wake caught my eye and I've been seeing it more of my photos.
I've included a lot of water in the shot and the wake is centered. Winds are light so the surface of the water is soft; the water looks peaceful.
Shot with a 10mm wide angle, I think I was trying to make the water the subject with the boat and person just helping to frame water.
I loathe taking 'portraits' or a composed shot of someone. They rarely know I've taken their picture. Here, having an unaware person in the photo helps the scale and maybe the mood. Any more 'person' would be distracting.
I set the slowest shutter speed I could to get (1/50 sec.) and got a slight blur in the water off the port rail(does that matter?). The focal length, F22 gave clear focus through out.
Surprisingly, this was taken at 11:14 am. The light is kind of high for a good shot but the wind was spot on. Earlier; better light - no sailing as it was windless. Later afternoon, better light - too much SAIL as winds I'm sure were 10-15, or more. You can't get everything.
