The glass is quite abrasive relative to steel..

I suspect that the abrasive characteristic of the glass is because it is very brittle and breaks leaving sharp edges where steel cuts and is comparatively maleable. Also epoxy or polyester resin are lousy heat conductors compared to steel so the tap get hotter than when tapping steel at the same rate.

I used to machine glass in my previous life and it played hell with lathe tooling.
