With the demise of celestial navigation over the years, good metal sextants have gotten cheaper. I saw a rundown Tamaya at Minneys in Newport Beach the other day. It needed new mirrors and a good cleaning and adjustment but for $200 and some parts it would make a fine, showpiece instrument.
And what's this about 1/10 mile accuracy. Not me!!! I am happy to see a triangle of a mile or so on a side on dry land and 5 miles from a pitching boat. But 5 mile accuracy plus a depth sounder (or lead line if you want to go back to basics) will get you into any major harbor.
