On machine tool tapers, you don't lubricate

is the general thinking. Machine tools use tapered spindles (e.g. Cat 40) to mount cutting tools, and the taper fit is expected to transmit the torque. A prop shaft is considerably smaller for the same or more torque but I suppose the principle is the same. I put light oil on the taper just to make sure everything seats correctly, assuming any excess will squeeze out.
