Yeah, the thinking is perhaps the sun should be behind the viewer.

...instead of behind the boats.

The shots you and Todd supplied have shown that.

In the original photo of the boats (in the "study" post) the sun is somewhat higher in the sky, but diffused by high clouds, so the shadows don't really show, but the sails come out really white.

The sun behind the viewer would also tend to cast colored (pink, orange) light on the sails... if the clouds were also brightly colored.
