The Man Overboard Module costs $$$ and must be serviced like a liferaft. It has a quick release and self inflates... horseshoe buoy, mast, light, drogue. Much better than the old fashioned rats nest of separate components. In order to keep that old stuff from falling overboard by mistake, it was secured nine ways to Sunday (is that the expression?). It would take several minutes to release the old rigs.
A friend of a friend was saved by a MOM during an Atlantic crossing. The victim got swept overboard while she was working on the foredeck. She had a head injury but the MOM was released quickly enough that she swam to it.
