Corian or veneer

We replaced the galley Formica with Corian. It looks beautiful and really doesn't weigh that much. It's been in for 5 years now and still looks like new.

The counters in the heads are another story. The top of the vanities are 3/4" plywood with white Formica laminated to the top. I tried to remove the Formica with no success. Removing the entire top was going to be a lot of work and hassle. I decided to go over the Formica with a new top coat.

I sanded the Formica with 40 grit on an orbital sander. Using a good spray adhesive I laid down Birds Eye Maple veneer and covered the veneer with that thick bar cover resin. The stuff flowed out ending up perfectly flat, thick and clear. looks beautiful.

We did the rear head in Birds Eye Maple and the forward head in Burlwood. 5 years later and they still look the same.

If you want a good look without taking off the top you might explore giving the idea of a beautiful wood veneer top a go. There's a lot to choose from.

I was afraid to go over the Formica but it's fine.
