LEDs do also have the issue of focus... LEDs tend to need a lens to focus the light and that lens can make for dark spots if the multiple LEDs in a lamp do not line up properly.
Incandescent lamps can have a dark spot too, depending on the location of the filament supports, but overall, an incandescent lamp is more likely to be an all around light... LEDs require multiple "chips" to achieve that same coverage, and if one single chip is misaligned or burned out, you could have a dark spot that is quite evident.
I would think this aspect of LEDs verses Incandescent lamps might form the basis of some of the negativity surrounding LEDs.
Now that all said... I use an all around incandescent for my anchor light (as I have not yet gone aloft on my boat) and two solar powered LED "lawn lamps" at the deck for visibility.
