Since the board seems to be on a thru-hull/seacock kick and I got up-close and personal with mine last summer I thought I'd throw this in.
I got the wood cone plugs like 'everyone' says you should in case, well, you know. Anyway, once I got to thinking about it, it occurred to me that the darn things might not stay in place very well without being taped or glued or pounded in. Also, if I had some kind of irregularly shaped breach the perfectly smooth, round, hard cone may not be the item of choice to shove in the hole anyway.
I've noticed that West sells these packs of soft, closed cell foam plugs that presumably would form themselves better to a less than round opening. They charge a zillion dollars for a few cents of foam of course.
So I thought, why not buy some kind of pool floaty thing made out of the same material and cut it up into various sizes and shapes to provide a selection of pieces that might more easily form into an opening.
Would this work? Better ideas?
