I tried one of those low cost solar walk lights, and found that the light output was poor and the unit had a very short life. After a month, the light output became less and less. After 6 months its tough to tell whether its on or off.
I've had good luck with the low voltage wired lights. The cable is not hard to bury, as it doesn't have to go deep. Where I ran the cable across the lawn, I just cut a slit with an axe and a 3# hammer, and pressed the cable in. You can put the lights on a timer, but I just tapped into the circuit for my existing front door light - when the front door light comes on, so do the walk lights. Of course, the walk lights go through a transformer to drop the voltage.
