The "west end."
Last time I was on Catalina was last labor day weekend... there were no moorings available anywhere. (was actually quite funny listening to the VHF and hearing one gold plater after another pout when they could not get a mooring... "but we just brought our 76 footer over for the weekend..." ) We anchored south of Long Point in about 25 feet of water. Was quite nice to be there. I normally avoid all holidays on the water... but it was the only time I could get away to move the boat. I also had the last slip at Oceanside that same weekend. (actually the last slip... the next guy into the office after me was turned down)
Looking to go back to the island sometime next fall and gunkhole around the island. In the past we have vacationed for a week on the island in the summer when my son was very young... great place to do 4th of July.
Avalon off season (now) is nice, during season, forget it... just too hard to get in.
The odd weather we are having now is probably pretty nice... except for the potential for Santa Ana winds, which can come right into Avalon Bay and reek havoc.
