Actually, a sailboat hull -- even steel, unless it's a really big hull) -- isn't that visible.

We had 50-75' long, steel fishing trawlers off of Cape Cod, where you can see the lights and nets through the binocs that show only faintly on the radar in the chop. It's not frequent, but some boats just have a crappy return in certan sea states.

A sailboat with a reflector up above the first set of spreaders is a lot more visible.

Steel sailboats have a better return, but it's not that consistent.

However, if you get in a collision, you're going to make more of a dent and probably be dented less than a glass boat ;^)
