Very sad news of the passing of one of the original members of our extended family here...

Just heard the news that Logan s/v SCOTTY ANN died on Saturday morning...

They certainly broke the mold when they made that guy, what a character Don was... I had the great pleasure of meeting he and his partner Moe twice, out in California

A very bizarre symmetry of the timing of this for me, for the last time I saw Don was this very weekend - the middle weekend of April, which has always been the date of the Long Beach Grand Prix. It would have been an evening aboard JOINT ADVENTURE with Rod and Patti Headlee, and Don happened to be in LA at the time as well...

I remember the first time I met him like it was yesterday... I was out in LA to shoot a pre-season test session at Fontana in January, and Don and Moe were temporarily living at a friend's place, helping him deal with some legal problems... It was on the eve of the Super Bowl the year that the Rams played the Titans, and we spent the night watching and America's Cup race from Auckland...

He certainly lived life to the fullest, he did some amazing stuff during his time here... Hell, some of the things he did during his time spent in Alaska, for example, he was lucky to have survived... That's the one consolation, his is certainly not one of those sad cases where adventures were postponed and left undone due to an early passing, and in regards to cruising, he and Moe were the poster children for the mantra of "Go small and cheap, but go NOW..." We should all be as lucky to check out with as few regrets of things left un-tried as Don likely had...

Amazing guy, he just went out and did it, yet was remarkably modest and matter of fact about it all... I'll always consider myself very fortunate to have met him those couple of times, and was really looking forward to the possibility of having them head up the coast in our direction, on their planned cruise up towards Newfoundland and Labrador... Moe was every bit as intrepid as Don, I think she was the one really pushing that particular itinerary, I believe her family had originally come from Nova Scotia, and they wanted to cruise that part of the world...

A glass or two will be raised to Logan tonight, for sure...
