I was sailing on a retired Admiral's yacht. We gave the polished brass a thin coat of vegetable oil after polishing. It lasted till the next polishing the following morning. The only time the brass wasn't polished was underway.

Varnish and clear lacquer somewhat worked, but stripping it back down was worse than daily polishing.
