We stopped for one night at the Chinchorro Bank of Mexico. The bank is 30 miles from the mainland and all of it below water level (no reef to spot). Of course,,, it was also off on the charts by almost 2.5 miles. (It was really difficult to find when it's below water and not where it's suppose to be.) We arrived from the west near sunset, dropped the sails and started motoring east search for it. To find it you watch the depth as it shallows from 3,000 feet and anchor in about 12 feet of water but like I said, as we approached the bank by chart it wasn't there. Since it's 20 miles long I decided to continue to motor east. We had to motor another 20 minutes to find it.
The only way to tell we were approaching the bank was from the swells getting smaller, then Reylyn saw a change of water color through the binoculars and we continued toward the lighter colored water starting to dodge the darker spots that were showing up around us. With the sun on the horizon I found a sandy spot and dropped the anchor with no land in sight.
The bank is about 4 miles wide so the break on the far reef can't be seen.
Nothing is sight but water. Really weird.
Hows this for an anchorage. The same in every direction.
