she rode out the hurricane on the mooring, which is very exposed but is out near the head of the harbor, 1/2 way to Islesboro I like to say. I was more concerned with other boats hitting her than I was with coming loose as I have a 5 ton piece of granite on the bottom and all the chain was new last year. Also I replaced my pennant this year with a new double Yale polydyne custom I made here at work. After considering all my options I took canvas off, bimini, dodger, and secured the headsail and mainsail but left them on.
Belfast Harbor is a site to behold when the wind is blowing in from the south/southeast and the tide is running, literally 6-8 foot breakers, I've seen it before. My wife and I were over in Castine visiting our daughter on sunday and when were coming heading home we talked about going to see the harbor and decided we didn't need to, best to not add to anxiety. Anyway I went aboard and found a couple of pillows had fallen off the settee and that was about it, oh and the salt shaker had tipped over!
There was one causality in Belfast, this boat apparently was dragging her mooring, hit one boat on the way in and according to observers some bystander went out to "salvage" it, this was in the height of the storm and before it hit the beach, put someone aboard, and tried to tow it I guess but got overwhelmed. Luckily no one was hurt. The harbor master was on scene talking to the owner on the phone and she was not happy that these idiots were involved....the boat is on stands in anticipation of a barge coming over at high tide to lift her off after the holes are patched.
I was reading the posts about chafe gear, and I used this stuff...http://fjordinc.com/ It took the punishment in stride though my deck/cleat configuration is pretty clean.
