We have a groove -- but not a very narrow one for our 3/8" HT. We have a 55# CQR. The chain will sometimes twist because of the wind/current shifts.

Occassionaly if does the rotating (Vosbury) flop as it comes up accross the roller. Doesn't seem to be much of an issue for us.
