I'm guessing the whole thing was basically a stunt, blown way out of proportion, to attract attention and serve as a promo for the eventual episode in which it is featured...
The captain allegedly has 30 years experience, this was supposedly the first time he has ever called the CG in as much time...
I thought this was the best quote:
