I prefer the latter, but I guess we do both.

Your two week trip sounds wonderful. We usually sail that way here in Maine, choosing destinations daily to the wind, or just staying put. I find this area of the coast unusual in supplying fair sailing winds to more than ample destinations in such a combination, as to really limit the need to power. We've kept boats in many areas where that was not the case.

One year while on a 2 week cruise down your way, we took advantage of fair winds and sailed south to Newport and spent several days there. Another time similar winds sent us to Block Island and back, under sail. When we do extend our range a bit, we usually don't move too far, and enjoy sailing as much as possible.

Having "sailed" up and down the coast a couple of times in my life, I've resigned myself to the fact that going much distance with any time restriction means most of the miles will be under power.

But without the effort it's taken, I never would have seen some of the magnificent places I've enjoyed with our sailboats. In fact I probably would not be living where I am, having sailed into this area nearly 20 years ago, on a sailing vacation, away from our home at the time.
