Rocna's sizing recommendations are admittedly pretty conservative...
In Response To: It's such a great anchor? ()

Hey Steve,

IMHO, they've always offered by far the most comprehensive explanation of any anchor manufacturer their approach to sizing... Most manufacturers simply offer a chart for boat length and/or displacement, and leave it at that... Rocna's website is very informative re many subjects related to ground tackle, well worth a look around even for those not using their anchors:

It will be interesting to see how the acquisition by Canada Metals plays out. I'd have a bit more faith if they intended to manufacture in North America as was done with the original Rocnas before they moved production to China, but I've heard no mention of such a plan, so far... Canada Metal's website describes them as a leading "supplier" of chain for the marine industry, with manufacturing bases in both North America and Asia... Hmmm, 2 guesses as to where most of their stuff is made...

CMP remains very much of an offshore company, not nearly as "Canadian" as it might initially appear:

The acquiring company is headquartered here:
CMP Global Ltd.
The Business Center,
Upton, St. Michael
Barbados BB 11103

and manufactures here:

JiaDa Specialty Metals Ltd.
#8-1 YongDingHe Rd.
Beilun, Ningbo, Zhejiang
China, 315807

Good news is, the new owners intend to replicate West Marine's policy of taking back any suspect anchors ... I'd say that is stepping up to the plate, bigtime, we shall see:

"Initial information (derived from an on-going investigation) indicated that for a period beginning 2010 the shanks of some of the Rocna anchors were manufactured using a steel alloy that did not meet the manufacturing specification. This information was released in the spring of 2011 which resulted in the issue of a West Marine Specification Notice as well as those suspect anchors being subjected to rigorous testing. The results of the testing confirmed that these anchors, while not meeting the design specification, did not pose any safety concerns, and still exceeded industry proof load strength requirements.

Regardless of the lack of a safety concern, Canada Metal will replicate the West Marine initiative on a global basis exchanging anchors for those concerned. For more information, please contact us so that we can ensure your complete satisfaction.
