Happy New Year!
One winter project is to finally replace my cockpit speakers, which are old fashioned permanent magnet speakers that have an unfortunate tendency to interfere with the autopilot compass. The existing speakers are mounted behind holes in the cockpit bulkhead, and the holes have screw-in inspection ports covering them. You have to take off the port covers to hear the music, but I kind of like the idea of having a sealed inspection port over the hole in rough weather offshore.
The only marine low-magnetic field speakers I have found are the Poly Planar speakers, which are advertised as "waterproof." Looks like they are a drop in fit for the existing inspection port cutouts, which would be nice, or a rather ugly fit with the existing rather ugly (from the aft cabin) speakers.
So -- here's the question -- anyone have any experience with how "waterproof" these speakers really are? In other words, if I replace screw-in inspection ports with uncovered Poly Planar speakers, how much ocean can I expect in the aft cabin? What if we are inverted? Unfortunately, the Poly Planar speakers do not seem to have covers.
