what to do

If you find an artifact, and are not going to use it for demonstration purposes, like we do, I'd donate it to the Abbe museum in Bar Harbor. Or a local museum near where you found the item. I was sort of shocked that the library North Haven has artifacts out in the open..points, plummets, adzes and such. People tend to walk off with these things, and I encouraged the folks at the Library to put them behind some sort of barrier. I'm lucky to have an archaeologist friend nearby, who photos the finds, catalogue's them etc. He also taught the kids and I the elements and history of flint knapping, how to spot likely habitation sites etc. It's kind of an amateur hobby of mine, so we are always on the lookout for these sites, and have been reasonably successful in finding them on the out islands. Not too hard if you know what to look for...Here's a place (to remain unamed) that many Maine cruisers visit that we found a several items..
