WOW Greg, that was quite the project ...
In Response To: Replaced our tank... ()

... congratulations and thanks for sharing. You made my heart sink when I read right off the bat ... "This is the worst job you will ever have to do ...". Jesus. Well, my tank isn't under the engine nor is any of it in the bilge. Unlike yours, the outside of my 26 year old tank looks brand new, nice & shiny, there really is no (white) corrosion like yours, it is clean as a whistle. And perhaps why I should consider keeping it. We'll see what she looks like when I clean it, the last time I did 5-6 years ago, it looked brand new inside then too, just like yours. I am (perhaps overly) optimistic mine will come out much easier, which is what I would like to do, and have a good look. But I still think I'll wind up with a new one.

The new tank looks really great Greg, what a project, what nice work you did. Excellent idea of the Sender in the (easily replaced) access plate. I do think however all senders have universal mounting & drill patterns, but you never know. The access plate I now have looks like about the same size as yours ... with half the number of fasteners, and they are not bolts coming up through, they are maybe 1/4" machine screws tapped into the not so thick tank skin, and one of them has been stripped ever since I've had the boat.

I am curious, looks like you have brass or bronze fittings into the tank and access ... why did you not use aluminum fittings ? How far off the tank bottom is your engine pick-up ? Like mine, not much area at the bottom and maybe a good reason to keep it up a bit. And with this new tank, do you notice any diesel smell whatsoever around the tank, hoses or fittings ?

Very cool, thanks again Greg ... really nice looking work !

Cheers, John
