Since Rocna was "outed" on the steel quality issue, it's not enough (IMHO) for the new owners of the company to say it's strong enough to meet SHHP classification without making a clear statement on the web site and the label about what quality of steel is used now. ( http://www.canmet.com/content/resources/documents/ROCNA%20MEMO.pdf Canada Metals will ... "ensure that all Rocna products will meet the exacting design standards") Lowering price will help sales but for the buyer who has done the Internet research the questions remain (at least in my mind) unless they do that.
I do believe the current Rocna has the same excellent holding and is "strong enough" for my use 99.99% of the times I would anchor, but what if I'm caught far away from home while vacation-cruising when a hurricane hits? Why not buy one that has a better reputation?
If I was in the market for a new anchor it would be a Manson Supreme or perhaps the new Manson Boss (when it comes out). I own a Canada-made Rocna and a Manson Supreme now, and overall they are the best performing (setting and holding) anchors I've used. Also carry a Fortress as kedge/spare. I'm looking forward to seeing anchor tests on the Manson Boss. The hoop is a disadvantage (I think it limits penetration depth in some situations and it traps a major ball of mud and vegetation from the bottom, and that ball of "trapped stuff" also might impede re-setting in some situations). The hoop also wears againts my sprit, just barely.
Other makers have a better reputation than Rocna, for now, and Canada Metals needs to show better clarity before it would resolve my concerns.
