Take a look at the pic. There is a free floating bar at the bottom of the rig, held by the fabric. The mainsheet attaches to that along three different points. When you roll the boom, you're rolling the mechanism inside... Hard to explain so hopefully the pic tells the story.

There are no battens but I don't see why they couldn't be added. The slot is plenty wide enough.
