The cushions I've seen with piping that didn't look good have always seemed to have covers that didn't snugly fit the foam. The covers tended to roll around and even in some cases have wrinkles. A snug cover is a bit of a pain to get on the foam sometimes, but it does look better.

I think piping can look good, but so can cushions without it; definitely a thematic style thing. Personal preference.
