I just learned--and confirmed, much to my surprise--that Vodka works!

Wet a cloth in it, slap the cloth over the gluey spot...wait 5 minutes...scrub with a little fine bronze wool.
If you don't want to waste the vodka, WD-40 and some fine bronze wool works as well or better than anything else.
