I am fitting a 19 gallon day-tank in my cockpit locker, it fits there nicely. After reading an article by the Morgan's Cloud folks on the advantages of a day tank (see link), I am planning to retain that as my primary fuel tank (19 hours ~ 27 hours of motoring). I'll cut out a large access panel in my cockpit locker to access and cut out the old tank (which cannot be removed without removing the engine and a bunch of other accessories). I'll then install a pair of Moeller tanks, say in the 20-25 gal range each, whatever size I can get in there and that fits nicely where the old tank was. I will plumb them to my fuel polisher, and from there transfill into the day tank. Should be simple, easy, and best of all I won't need to remove the engine.
At the risk of asking yet another dumb question, the new 19 gallon tank has three ports (1.5" fill, fuel outlet and vent). I am planning to T the vent fitting, and use it for both the vent and the fuel return line (each a 1/4" line), and when the time comes, for the line bringing fuel from the 'storage' tanks. Anyone see a problem using that port for all three lines (engine return, transfill from the storage tanks, and vent)? I believe it's a 3/8 port, where the vent and return lines are both 1/4" and the polisher 5/16.
Thanks,
Max
PS any volunteers to crawl in there and cut out my old tank?
